Corporate Advocacy

Over the past six years, Kent Brunette has served as a consumer advisor and consultant to Southwestern Bell Communications (SBC) and Bank of America – two of the nation’s largest telecommunications and financial service companies.  In this capacity, Kent proposed, developed, wrote, and implemented several innovative consumer education and advocacy campaigns that were co-sponsored by key external groups and his corporate clients.  Two of these projects were awarded consumer education excellence awards by the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators (NACAA).

Personal Finance

Brunette's three books (above) demonstrate his intimate familiarity with and ability to explain complex personal finance issues in terms everyone can understand.  This knowledge is based, in part, upon his activities while serving as AARP's chief consumer lobbyist.  In this capacity, Brunette helped draft legislation/amendments and secure congressional passage of the following consumer protection measures: Truth In Savings, Truth In Lending, Fair Credit Billing, Fair Credit Reporting, Fair Debt Collection Practices, Telephone Consumer Protection, Home Equity Lending, Real Estate Settlement Procedures, and Fair Lending.  Once passed by Congress and signed into law, Brunette used his legal writing skills to help draft federal regulations implementing these and numerous other consumer protection provisions.  Brunette's involvement in personal finance issues has continued in recent years through his activities as a consumer advisor and consultant to Bank of America.

Creative

While at AARP, Brunette planned and executed two high visibility media campaigns that resulted in congressional passage of legislative measures supported by AARP.  In the baseball campaign (unveiled on the opening day of baseball season), Members of Congress were sent baseballs wrapped in the slogan "Don't throw consumers a curve on home equity legislation."  The hula hoops campaign, which occurred in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the invention of the toy, conveyed the following message to Congress: "Don't make consumers jump through hoops to gain access to basic banking services."  Both of these campaigns featured full-page Washington Post advertisements, press releases, and other materials that generated significant positive media attention.

Brunette has helped his corporate clients conceive, draft, and implement a variety of creative campaigns that were jointly conducted with major national advocacy organizations.  These outreaches have included:

  • "got cookies?" - a holiday season consumer education campaign by Persona (an Internet privacy company) on identifying & eliminating computer cookies;

  • "From Here To Security: Your Map To Financial Freedom" - a joint NationsBank/Consumer Federation of America investor education campaign;

  • "Too Much Of A Good Thing May Be Hazardous To Your Wealth" - a joint NationsBank/Genus Credit Management outreach on the perils of declaring bankruptcy (print media column);

  • "Money Matters For The Sandwich Generation" - a Citibank MasterCard/VISA-sponsored media and public forum tour to select cities on a range of financial issues (speech);

  • "Staying In Touch: Technology Made Easy" - AT&T's radio news feature program; and

  • "CreditAbility" - a joint American Express/BankCard Holders of America national media and public forum tour to cities across the country on shopping around for credit cards.

Radio Programs

Kent Brunette has written, produced, and syndicated two daily national radio news feature programs.  Of 60- to 90-second durations, these programs entailed developing monthly story boards, researching diverse communications and financial issues, drafting scripts, editing scripts (sometimes in the studio when the tapes were rolling), and obtaining corporate legal clearances.  Upbeat and informative, scripts were succinct to accommodate severe time constraints.  Brunette's two daily radio news feature programs were:

  • Staying In Touch: Technology Made Easy.  On the air three years, AT&T's nationally syndicated program was heard on 311 radio stations each weekday.  Two segments aired weekends on 43 other stations on the WOR Radio Network's "Into Tomorrow" program; and
